Create User Login and Save User Data

I currently have a website hosted using wordpress.com and its graphical editing tools. I would like to add a login system that will allow users to save some basic information (for example their favorite web links) are they create their login credentials.

I have front end web experience (HTML/CSS) but no back end experience (php/MySQL). Is there a way to implement a system like this without hard coding the back end using my wordpress.com website? Maybe using a plugin if wordpress.com supports them? If not, can someone direct me to a tutorial that will show me how do to it myself? Unfortunately a fair amount of googleing has turned up nothing so far.
