IIRC, i think menus and widgets will remain, but things like header & logo graphics will need to be reset. It’s really not terribly painful, and of course you can also switch back and forth if needed.

@transmothra Thanks! If I switch back to the original parent theme after activating the child theme will the original settings still be retained?
I had thought that it did, but upon further research, it appears some things may not be retained? So make a backup before switching. I do know that when i switched my theme recently (which is a little touch and go as i’m actively trying to scrudge it into shape atm), else i’d test it for you right now myself), my menu and widgets seemed to be retained, but that apparently may not be the case. I was switching from a previous default theme to twenty seventeen, so that may have made it easier or something. But when i tried to live preview the old theme just now, it was definitely not as it was.
So yeah – take a backup first.
So sorry i couldn’t be of more help. It’s shamefully been thousands of years since i’ve touched my own WordPress and i’m only just now getting back into things.

AFAIK – settings probably won’t be retained. I was always told it is the same as switching to a completely different theme. WordPress would not know you’re switching to a Child Theme and would not retain settings.
