• Hi all,

Ok so before I start I’m gonna mention that I currently manage and run my work wordpress website so I have a good idea of how it works. My problem is that I did not install it, it was passed onto me from someone who left.
Anyway, I am now buying a business which already has a website. The website is outdated and needs upgrading. I think I know what I need to do but again am not sure so I’m gonna list what I think I should do and hope someone will correct me if I get something wrong! I’d hate to start working on the new webiste and realise I made an arse of it! 😉 (excuse my Irish 😉 )
Step 1: Transfer the domain to my name.
Step 2: Set up an account with company to transfer domain to.
Step 3:Transfer the domain to a company of my choice (who will also host my website)
Step 4: Purchase hosting account with company
    Step 5: Change nameservers
    Step 6: Install wordpress
Step 7: Choose theme (I’m thinking Storefront)
Step 8: Download Woocommerce (I failed to mention this will be an online shop)
    Step 9: Build website

Ok so sorry for the detail! Another question I have is, will woocommerce have sufficient features to manage my online store? Do I need to pay a company like NitroSell to do this for me?
Obviously I’d like to keep the costs as low as possible!

I’ll send sooooo much good karma to anyone that can help, advise, mentor me!

    Thank ya’ll

  • Hey there,

    Irish over here too!

You’ve got most of it right and in theory that will work, however that means you will have downtime for your current website.

I’d recommend you either build the site on localhost (WAMP or XAMPP) – loads of tutorials online to show you how to install those and get up and running. You can build the site locally on your machine then.

You can start transferring the domain to your name, you’ll have to request an auth code from the current host and add that code when moving provider.

Once you have the site ready and your hosting purchased, you can upload the site to the newly created hosting account. (I’d recommend Blacknight in Ireland). You’ll have to make some small edits in the wp-config.php file to make the site now point to the right urls but that’s all very straightforward and you can get lots of help on here if you’re stuck. I’d only recommend changing the nameservers at that point or you will have (as I said earlier) downtime on your current site.

Woocommerce is a great plugin for managing a small store. I’m assuming if you’re building the site yourself and you’re saying you want to keep costs low, it will be a small store. Stripe is a great provider and easily installed plugin for credit card payments on woocommerce.

Let me know if you have any other questions or need any further help.

Whois the current domain name registrar?

If the domain is registered with Name.com for example, then you can create a free account there, and then push the domain name for free from the old account to your account. The push take’s a minute and there is no need to transfer the domain name to another registrar, which will take 4-7 days.

If the domain name is registered with a web hosting company, then I do recommend transfering the domain name, to one of the top registrars such as Name.com, NameCheap, GoDaddy, Enom..etc

As for web hosting, choose one that offer’s enough space/bandwidth and with a server close to your visitors. I recommend you avoid “Unlimited Space/Bandwidth” web hosts, since such a thing doesn’t exist and its only a marketing scheme to draw you in.

Once your hosting account is setup and you changed your nameservers, log into cPanel and use the one-click installer to install WordPress, or ask your host to install it for you.

Installing a theme, WooCommerce as well as other plugins is also easy to do. Building the website itself with products and content is a job you do on daily bases.

An important advice I can give online, is always to backup your website.
