• Does anyone know if Polylang can be (or has been) extended for crowdsourcing translations? If not, are there any other plugins designed for that purpose?

The idea of crowdsourcing translations is to tap the multilingual skills and generosity of a blog’s followers to translate posts for the benefit of those who speak their language. Here is how I imagine a crowdsourced translation being created in a blog:

    1. Certain multilingual users are given a role or capability for translating the blog’s posts/pages from the original language into their language. For example, say you have an English blog and user Karl is designated as a German translator.

    2. When Karl sees an original post (in English), he is presented with an option to “Translate this post into German”. Selecting this option opens a translation interface with the original post displayed next to a WYSIWYG editor for him to write his translation. (The original post could include a special field with Translation Tips written by the original author, for example, alerting translators to a play on words or other subtle meanings that could get lost in translation.) Other German translators could also create their own translations of the post.

    3. When German readers (who are not translators) visited the German webpage for that post, they would have access to all the different translations via a tabbed interface — one tab for each translation. Then they could vote on which translation was best, and the tab for the highest rated translation would be displayed first (“on top”) by default. Alternatively, the reader could select the translation of a particular translator they prefer.

    4. The comments for each translated post could also be tabbed, with one tab for normal reader comments and a second tab for the post’s translators to discuss translation issues.
