css change in layout

I’m trying to make four images (the four latest images) horizontal instead of vertical and it works if I change the file layout.css but not if I include the changes in the custom css editor. I’ve tried adding only the changed data and also including the whole file in there, but neither works. Any ideas? I don’t want to lose my changes in the next upgrade.
