Custom attributes for widget elements

Hi
I am due to launch a new website soon and one of the testers is blind and using a screen reader. He has highlighted an issue with the imagebox widget in that it reads out ‘figure’ for every image .. and we have several imageboxes on the homepage.

I know that I can use aria-hidden to hide the entire widget from screen readers, but is it possible to only hide the image?
