Custom content template "content.php" IE content-"POST-TYPE.php"

Trying to wrap my head around creating a custom layout for a list of posts for my custom post type.

The single template is easy to change single-“Your custom post type”.php

I tried creating a file like content-my-custom-post-type.php with no luck.

What is the proper way to do this?
