Custom css conflict?

So I had an issue and I figured it out…. but I am wondering if anyone can help further: I had put custom css just altering half the the text to a different color in two small areas of the homepage. For some reason this caused a conflict and made the header and footer, on only that page look funny and pull some of the style from the underlying theme it seems. but why? I tried just renaming the class in case it was that but it doesn’t seem to matter what I put in there. Any thoughts? I’d like to not be discouraged from learning and practicing css… thanks
