What theme are you using?
I’m sorry but as you appear to be using a commercial theme, you need to seek support from the theme’s developer/vendor. We do not support commercial products here.
core is coming with WP – it’s not commercial!
I mean the Kubrik core theme that was the DEFAULT WP theme for a very long time

I had no idea this is a theme related problem
You can check by switching to the current twentytwelve theme – see if it has an issue.
The 2012 theme does not have this particular function (gradient background)
The Kubric core theme (default) has been continued by Michael Heilemann .. maybe a good idea to contact him.
There are some other threads about other php5.4 issues – where is this site hosted?

It’s really no bone-breaker issue – using php 5.3 is just doing fine.
