Custom template not working

I made a custom template, which I called hvd.php.
In the settings, I choose “custom template” and then fill in “hvd” in the text box below. I refresh the page in the browser, it seems like the custom template is not applied.
In order to test, I renamed “standard.php” and then refreshed my page.
Indeed, I see runtime errors telling me that “standard.php” couldn’t be found.
Conclusion based on this test: the “custom template” setting is not working.
Could this be due to caching?
