I have a problem that is really strange. I had to add some .css to a theme we bought for our website. Based on the instructions in the theme, I put the code in the custom_css.css. My problem is this: The file has been emptied three times. By “emptied”, I mean overwritten by a blank version of it. I have no explanation for it.

    I have two questions:

    1) The file permissions are 644. Should I change the file permissions to 444?
    2) Any idea what can be doing this?
    3) Is there another way to put in the CSS once (and have it apply to the entire site) through the admin interface? (I’m kind of new to WordPress)

    Thanks

Talk to your theme developers — we really can’t answer that question in isolation.

Thanks. I solved the problem by adding the css through the appearance->customize feature. There was a place to put in additional CSS.
