Regarding your question:
Any string from Paid Member Subscriptions can be modified with the Labels Edit functionality.
You can activate the Labels Edit functionality by going to your Dashboard -> Paid Member Subscriptions -> Settings -> Misc -> Other -> and enabling “Labels Edit”. After you’ve activated this functionality, you can go to Paid Member Subscriptions -> Labels Edit -> click on the “Rescan” button -> then select the label you want to modify.

This is not possible only with Paid Member Subscriptions, but there is a workaround while also using our other plugin, Profile Builder.
Paid Member Subscriptions integrate 100% with Profile Builder, documentation here. You can also read more about the new Registration process here (basically you are using the Profile Builder Registration form in which you add the PMS Subscription Plans as a field).
Now, to hide the Username field from the Profile Builder Registration form, you will need to go to Profile Builder -> Settings -> General Settings -> Allow Users to Log in With -> and from there select “Email”. This will hide the Username field from the front end and automatically generate usernames based on the email address, since all WordPress user accounts must have a Username. Keep in mind that this setting will hide the Username field from all Profile Builder forms (including Login and Recover Password forms).
