  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Hello Esmi,

Thank you so much. I will try all these in turn and report back.

That dashboard image you linked to isn’t the 3.8 dashboard, and your readme.html file says you’re still on version 3.7.

Is it possible you had an interrupted update or ftp session?

    Hello Clayton,
Good catch. I will try a manual update to 3.8 and see if that resolves the issue. WordPress now updates automatically, it is interesting that it may have crashed during the process somehow.

When does WordPress do the update? Is it when one logs on to the Dashboard for example?

Starting with version 3.7, WordPress can do minor release updates automatically on most sites. Example: 3.7 > 3.7.1 > 3.7.x etc… However, a major release update/upgrade still needs to be interactive. An admin has to choose to upgrade from the update dialog in the dashboard.

If you get a chance, this discussion is pretty in-depth, but also extremely informative: http://make.ww.wp.xz.cn/core/2013/09/24/automatic-core-updates/

Thank you. This is most helpful. This means that if it is the upgrade that was involved, it was the last of the 3.7 series. It may be something else entirely, and have nothing to do with the upgrades.

    Hello,

This issue is resolved. Deactivating the plugin ‘ozh Admin Drop Down Menu” restored the Dashboard. I have updated to WordPress 3.8,and here also this plugin causes the Dashboard to format incorrectly. Since this plugin is one of the most popular of all, with hundreds of thousands of downloads, there must be something slightly awry with my installation of WordPress, or one of the other plugins.

Many thanks for all your suggestions.

Actually, it appears that that plugin has problems:

If you are going to post on that forum, please DO start your own thread, however.
