Database Backups Location setting not working

The backup feature of iThemes Security by default saves the backups in the (public) upload folder. I wanted to move these backups to a location outside the public web folder, so i created an iThemes folder next to [httpdocs] (chmodded it to 750).
However, setting the “Backups Location” to the new folder didn’t change the saving location for the backups.

This has already been discussed here and i guess that the solution of the dwinden will probably work (changing the plugin code; i have not tested it yet). This solution, however, will be delete with every plugin update. Can’t this bug be solved any other way?
