You can but why would you do that? The retina images are send to retina users already, no need of using the debug mode.
because the images resized and compressed by wordpress are very poor quality (blurry) compare to the @2x files and they almost are the same size in Kb.

Actually the retina images are also generated by the WordPress engine too 😉 But the plugin specifies the JPG quality and the default setting I use is quite high already. You can override the default setting for your normal images through another plugin I believe, or through your theme (maybe there is a way to do it directly in WordPress or its config too).
