• Recently google have not indexed our website. We have installed a new wordpress a few weeks ago. The site was there for years but we have just converted it from html to wordpress.

Now, i found out that in privacy>settings the default was “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors”.

I wonder why this happened? I never edited the privacy. Also in my other older wordpress installation, I never edited this section BUT the default is NOT this.

Are new wordpress’ (2.8 above) default privacy setting are really “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors”? I hope it would be announced so that from now on, every time we have a new wordpress install we must edit the privacy settings first. And save time wondering why all this happened.

Not as far as I’m aware…

I”d have to say yes. I install several of these a week and got hit with the same comments. the new defaults appear to be that it blocks earch engines

Actually, I don’t think it’s a WordPress change. Did you install through Fantastico?

If so, that’s where this settings is being turned off.

In the current version of WordPress, when you install manually there is a little checkbox that asks you if you want your site to be visible to search engines. It is checked by default.

However, when you install through Fantastico, it doesn’t give you this option and is as if it unchecks that box for you when it installs it because when you go to Settings -> Privacy, it is set to block search engines.

I had a site of my own that I recently converted to WordPress and I installed through Fantastico (about 3-4 months ago) and just realized today that this was set to block search engines.

If you want to read about what happened to me and also more details about this issue, I made a blog post about it.
