Designing for WordPress

My brother and I are launching a wordpress site that we wanna get attention to, but need to design it well. He’s a graphic designer, and we have a programmer that could probably link it all together.

Do any special precautions have to be made as far as html or javascript goes in order to make our design work with WordPress?
