I’m not positive, but I believe that requires that you’re using your wordpress.COM account credentials, and not those of a self-hosted site. Is that what you’re using?
Its a wordpress website which is self hosted. I also have a wordpress.com account, when I login to it, it shows the stats for my site and to be honest I don’t know if it serves any other purpose. When I try to comment using the wordpress option I also try giving my wordpress.com details which get rejected even when it is the correct password.
I don’t want to give up this time, I would really appreciatte if you can think of any way I can get help with this.

I have little use for WP.com myself, so I can understand that. But it does serve the purpose of ID verification through using your .com login credentials. I would try clearing browser cookies, logging in to your .com account, and then trying to comment on another blog that has Single Sign On enabled.
If it still doesn’t work, you might try the support forums over at .com, since this is really more in their territory and not (I don’t think?) related to your self-hosted site. Let us know how it goes. Plus, please let me know if I”m wrong about the role of your self-hosted site.
Thanks for taking the time Bill, its not a problem with the self hosting as this started over two years ago when my son in law saw to the hosting of my site. Comments I make are done through a page in my site where I store the links to those I regularly comment on. As I say, if I use the google drop down option the comment does go through, but a link back is to my google account and not my website. The wordpress option asks me to sign in to wordpress.com I do this opening another tab and information I give gets rejected.
I have tried a number of times to get .com help with this with no success.

I’m sorry you’re not getting the help you need over at .com, Alistair. Maybe give them the benefit of the doubt and try them once more. I really think that the problem lies in your credentials being rejected when you attempt to sign in to your .com account. Have you tried using the ‘lost password’ link on the .com account login page?
