I have numerous websites hosted with GoDaddy. Trying to update the Updraft Plus plugin is frankly a nightmare. Over half of my sites get one of these error messages during an updating of the plugin:

Update Failed: Inactivity Timeout Inactivity Timeout Description: Too much time has passed without sending any data for document.

Update Failed: <!DOCTYPE html> Maintenance Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.

I most cases one of 3 things happens:

    1) I refresh the page after a lengthy wait and the plugin has updated

    2) The plugin after a page refresh hasn’t updated

    3) The plugin after a refresh as deactivated and no longer shows up on my plugin page although the plugin folder is still there when viewed via FTP.

I many cases the only way I can update this plugin is with a manual upload via FTP.

    Hi Charles,

Plugins don’t update themselves; this is done by WordPress core. What it does is fairly straightforward:

    1) Downloads the zip file
    2) Unzips it
    3) Moves its contents into place, replacing the previous plugin directory

That’s why manually updating via FTP works – because WordPress is basically doing the same thing.

That being so, if your WP install consistently has trouble when doing a plugin update, that’s a strong indicator of a severely overloaded or underpowered webserver, or severe resource constraints on the account; a $50 phone from a decade ago can unzip a few megabytes of zip file in seconds, so, a webserver that’s struggling to do so has some problems. The best thing to do is talk to the web hosting company, who can advise you whether it’s their server (though, I don’t know if I ever heard a web hosting company ever admit to that in any context!!) or administratively-imposed resource constraints on your account.

I just noticed something. I am doing auto updates of your plugin through the GoDaddy Pro Dashboard. The update version is from 1.15.2 to 1.15.3. However I noticed on one of my websites that always has trouble updating that the updraft plugin version is saying Version 2.14.10.0 | By UpdraftPlus.com, DavidAnderson | View details

How can there be 2 different versions?

    Hi,

The 1.X.X version of the plugin is the free version of UpdraftPlus.

The 2.X.X version is the Premium version of UpdraftPlus, and requires a valid licence for updates. More information (and support) for the premium version is available via our site:
