Is there an option for disabling links from the calendar or would that require editing the code?

There’s no option, but there’s a filter which you can use, so neither do you need to edit the plugin code: http://codex.wp-event-organiser.com/hook-eventorganiser_calendar_event_link.html.

Please note the comment about the cache.
