I tried to enable the plugin or manually add the line in the functions.php file, but the post format box doesn’t go away.

Any ideas why it doesn’t work?

It doesn’t work because the post format UI feature never got added to WordPress 3.6. See:

The format meta box doesn’t have anything to do with this plugin.

What you want to do is remove the support for post formats. To remove support for post formats in your theme:
```
remove_theme_support( 'post-formats' );
```
Where to put that exactly might depend on your theme, so you’ll probably want to ask your theme author about that.
