• Hi,

I really hope someone can help me as I don’t relish the thought of completely removing WordPress and reinstalling.

I am working on this website http://www.sussexpathways.org.uk which was built by somebody else back in 2009. I started about 5 weeks ago and the first thing I did was update WordPress to the 3.5.2 version which was current (I didn’t notice what version was installed previously). It has been going fine although I noticed fairly early on that when updating some of the pages half the content disappears.

I have been managing the disappearing content by copying everything before updating and then just pasting the missing content back in and updating again. This has worked so far, however, last week my work around stopped working and I can no longer update any pages without the content disappearing. I have tried several things to rectify the issue including deactivating all the plug-ins, I have tried restoring the the default theme as well as updating in different browsers (Chrome, Firefox & Internet Explorer) and this morning I updated to version 3.6 hoping this would solve it. Alas nothing has worked yet. I have also tried using solely the html tab or solely the visual tab which makes no difference and I am now at the stage where I think the only thing left is to uninstall WordPress and start again.

Please save me from having to do this. I am not very techy so replies need to be in layman’s terms please.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Hi esmi,

Thanks for your reply, I have already tried the first 2 suggestions you made but to no avail.

So I went straight on to your 3rd suggestion…
    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I have managed to locate the PhpMyAdmin folder and follow the instructions for deactivating the plugins. However, when I returned to my WordPress dashboard I now get the following error messages…

Warning: htmlspecialchars() [function.htmlspecialchars]: charset `UTF-7′ not supported, assuming iso-8859-1 in /home/sussexp/public_html/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 2751

Warning: htmlspecialchars() [function.htmlspecialchars]: charset `UTF-7′ not supported, assuming iso-8859-1 in /home/sussexp/public_html/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 2751

Warning: htmlspecialchars() [function.htmlspecialchars]: charset `UTF-7′ not supported, assuming iso-8859-1 in /home/sussexp/public_html/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 2751

    is this okay?

Um – no. That doesn’t sound right at all. Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.
