I have been using other image optimization plugins and decided to use imagify because it comes bundled with wp rocket.
The problem I see is that the size of the webp images is almost twice the size of the original images.

Google says:WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. WebP lossy images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index.

Why Imagify doubles the size of webp images?

I like Imagify because it is very easy to use, but until you fix that, I will continue to use other image optimization plugins without loss.

    Hi @forowebmaster!

This is Joseph from Imagify, and I’ll gladly assist you here!

I’m really sorry you’re having issues with this!

Sometimes WebP images end up being larger than the optimized JPG or PNG version of the same image due to factors involving the WebP filetype that are out of Imagify’s control.

Below is a link to a helper plugin that can be installed and activated to prevent the creation of WebP images any time they would end up larger than the optimized JPG or PNG version. Once it’s activated, try restoring these images to original and then re-optimizing them to see if this resolves the issue.

    Prevent Larger WebP Helper Plugin

Please let me know if this does not fix this issue in your case and I’ll be very glad to continue investigating this further!

    Best regards,
    Joseph

Hi, thanks for this solution. The problem I see is that it does not generate any webp images because they would all come out of a larger size.

Hopefully you can get an update in which you can use the optimized webp version without loss.

My favorite wordpress plugin is wp rocket and I expected no less from imagify.

    Hi @forowebmaster,

Sorry about that! May I ask, are you using the Normal compression level? I ask because this can be much more common while using that compression level.

You might have better luck with Aggressive if that compression level doesn’t affect image quality too much for you.

Yes, it is at normal level. The aggressive pixels somewhat the images. It would be nice if Imagify had an intermediate level between normal and aggressive.

I would like to suggest the following:
    Modify Imagify as follows:
The normal level would rename it to low, the new level would be normal (balanced where the webp size was no longer higher than the original without loss), and the following levels would be aggressive and ultra.

    Thanks for your attention.

    Hey @forowebmaster

    Thanks for letting us know.

And thanks for your suggestions and feedback. At this moment, we can not guarantee we will be able to make this kind of change in the recent future.

It looks like your case is quite specific as any further optimization or WebP creation to be smaller than original would affect image quality. It does not often happen, but can be the case. I am sorry it happened to you.

    Best Regards

    Marko
