• Has anyone ever experience a situation where a hosting provider has banned the use of specific plugins?

I have used the Danish hosting provider one.com for over 8 years. A few days ago, they disabled 3 of my websites without any prior notice, taking them completely offline, stating that I was using what they call a “discouraged” plugin – specifically the All-in-One Migration plugin.

On examination of their website they have an extensive list of plugins they “discourage”. The list includes every popular backup plugin and every popular caching/performance plugin and a whole raft of others.

I cannot find any reference online of any other hosting company not allowing back-up plugins so I’m surprised by this. More worrying is the aggressive policing of their policy by simply disabling business critical websites without any prior warning or notice to the owners. It’s quite shocking behavior in my opinion.

They claim that back-up plugins represent a security risk and put excessive load on their servers.

As well as having a list of “discouraged” plugins they also have a list of “recommended”plugins. This list includes Jetpack which ironically has a backup feature!

I have complained to them but I don’t see my complaint will make any difference to their policies.

Has anyone come across this with their hosting provider?

The service provider is free to do whatever they feel is in the best interest of their customers and business… including taking actions that may be deemed penalizing to some customers.

And you, as the customer, are free to vote with your wallet and move your website wherever you want.

If this host isn’t meeting your needs, move your site elsewhere. I see no point trying to make a sense of their actions and policies, as that’s not going to make any difference for you.

(For what it’s worth, I’m aware some shared and even managed hosting providers maintain a list of prohibited plugins. I only use private servers, so I’ve never had to deal with this sort of thing myself.)
