I am able to locate the original custom field code section and duplicate it. However I can’t get them to display in the actual post.

Yeah the two files are for the custom form, which can be customized a bit (like labels, placeholders, etc.). There is only one custom field provided by the free version of USP however, so adding more fields to the form (custom or otherwise) is not supported at this time.
