Display in a drop-down menu

I would like the output in drop-down. mMslsmenu plugin didn’t really work for me. Then, I found the below resolved thread which seems to be close to my requirements.

I’ve one question from this thread. You suggested some code to insert in here. So, is this applicable in all the cases where the theme files are shared over the multi-site network? What if there is no child theme?
