Display terms and post thumbnails

I’ve been up way too long I can’t get this just right what I want to do is list my custom tax terms and then display the featured images from the posts with the same term like
term 1
post 1 featured image
post 2 featured image
post 3 featured image

term 2
post 1 featured image
post 2 featured image

term 3
post 1 featured image

but I can’t get them separated I can get the terms but all images show up under every term
