Displaying WP data in another location

I use Word Press to run my blog in the /blog directory of my site (writeside.net/blog). What I’m curious to find out is, would it possible to use some PHP to display the first post (heading and maybe a teaser) on my main index page (i.e., writeside.net)? (The rest of the site does not run on WP.)

I believe some querying of the MySQL database is called for, and I have no idea how to do that or even if it is possible. Someone also mentioned that I might be able to use WP’s RSS feed to achieve this same end. Is that so?

Any help will be appreciated (even if it is someone telling me this is impossible!)
