Does WordPress load theme before maintenance mode?

    When I put wordpress into maintenance mode it seems that WP is trying to load my theme before that. Is that so?

    Please if you are enlightened on this. Share you’re knowledge!

    I discovered this as my theme was including (PHP include) stuff in header.php that was on different server and than that server went non-responsive and then the site hang on that include. But even when I was on maintenance-mode it still loaded very long.

    But as the server the include came to header.php came responsive again also the maintenance mode page loaded quickly.

    Looking at the WP core; no it does not. But I had the .maintenance (file) to allow a check if user is logged in. That caused a failure where the maintenance mode was not directly entered and thus caused some problems.
