When I click on the thumbnail of the theme I want to switch, it redirect me to the homepage of the site with the regular theme

I had the same issue. Selecting a theme redirected me to the homepage. It turned out that after selecting “Enable theme switching” the settings have to be saved. After saving the settings switching works. Hope this helps…
Best solution in my opinion would be to hide the list of available themes if theme switching is disabled.
