    Hi everyone,

I’m trying to move my wordpress.com (kantaloupe.wordpress.com) site to a ww.wp.xz.cn installation. I bought a domain (thekantaloupe.com) through GoDaddy 7 months ago but continued to use wordpress.com. I was using the wordpress.com hosting and simply forwarding the url to the kantaloupe.wordpress.com location.

Now I cancelled that service with wordpress.com and bought hosting from HostGator. However, even though I set up QuickInstall and put in all the nameservers into GoDaddy and whatnot, I still link back to wordpress.com when I try to access my site. It doesn’t go to the actual site anymore, but still says something like “thekantaloupe.wordpress.com doesn’t exist”. And QuickInstall and Hostgator seem to think everything is installed nice and clean, when clearly it’s not.

    1. thekantaloupe.wordpress.com doesn’t exist because I never made such a site!
    2. Why is the domain still linking to wordpress.com at all? Since I disconnected the two domains, shouldn’t I now have a blank slate to work from?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated, preferably sooner so I can still cancel my HostGator account if I have to (I have 2 days =D).

    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    Marcel

The good news is, your domain is directing to Hostgator for me.

When a domain is registered or altered, there is a process called propagation, where information about the domain name is passed to internet service providers all over the world. This process can take up to 72 hours (though usually much less). During that time, your domain may go to its old location, and you may also receive a warning message in your browser about “redirect errors.”

If you still have trouble viewing the site after 72 hours have passed, please try clearing your browser’s cache.

If that doesn’t work, try clearing your local DNS cache: https://support.opendns.com/entries/26336865-Clearing-the-DNS-Cache-on-Computers-Servers-and-Web-Browsers

The bad news is, it looks like this: https://cloudup.com/cD6jo4zXV_D

That tells me that the domain has not been properly added to your Hostgator account, or that Hostgator hasn’t properly mapped it to where the files are. Either way, I recommend checking with Hostgator’s support department about that.

    Thanks MacManX for the reply!

I’m still seeing the same thing after doing the DNS thing that you linked to in my Terminal. I guess I’ll wait until 72 hours are up.

Is there any way to upload the xml of my blog to the domain without using the wp-admin (which doesn’t work right now, since it keeps redirecting me to that stupid wordpress.com error message)? I’ll admit this is all super complicated to me, and I’m kind of following two or three different walkthroughs right now! All the videos I’ve seen just seem to work, whereas mine is being impeded by the fact that the internet still thinks my domain belongs to wordpress.com!

Anyway, thanks again, I’ll wait the 72 hours before continuing.

No, not really, you’ll need to access your Dashboard to do the import.

Make sure you have cleared both your browser’s cache and your computer’s DNS cache, it could be stuck in both.

Haha, I forgot to empty my cache… but that domain is still broken for me at the moment.

I fixed the problem temporarily by working straight out of the (http://108.167.143.22/~ab21476/) domain that hostgator has for me, and I can import everything and it all seems to work. (Can you actually access that site, or is it only visible to me?) That way I can at least start configuring settings and getting every thing set up – the themes from wordpress.com are gone! I’ll figure a way to move it back to thekantaloupe.com when that domain stops being a teenager.

I guess the problem is temporarily solved, though I’m interested to see if waiting will actually work. I’m trying to access the site through iPhones that have never been on there before and it still says the same thing. I’ve never managed to see the HostGator thing you saw. I guess maybe it’s recognising my IP address and giving me the wordpress.com site I saw before? I’m just rambling now about things I don’t understand 🙂

    I’ll keep workin’ at ‘er!

EDIT: When I click on an article to read it, it gives me a 404 error. Is this an inherent problem with the blog, or just because I’m not sitting on a real domain right now?

I can see the site at your IP, and I can see it at your domain now.

When everything has propagated for you, make sure to change the two URLs at Settings -> General in your blog’s Dashboard to use the domain instead of the IP.

As for the 404s, try re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

I’m so jealous you can see my site!

I’ll mark the topic as resolved, since I technically fixed the problem I wanted to fix. I’ll just have to wait and then I’ll follow your instructions.

    Thanks again!
