I downloaded 2.2.16, the WP User Avatar version before the update monstrosity. Can I copy the files in place over the new version, or is my database permanently incompatible with the old plugin now?

You can download the previous version from here https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/wp-user-avatar/advanced/ bottom of the page (2.2.16 version) and then manually edit the main file wp-user-avatar.php and change the version there to something unreachable like ‘Version: 999.9.9.9’ to prevent next updates
