I have a site broken out from a multisite setup. I wanted to put it in its own subdirectory on the same server. I did a clean install, and then imported the XML as per usual.
None of the links would work and I got “Failed to download media” during the import. The permalinks to the files got buggered too and was missing the file endings.
OK, I figured I would just have to upload the files again. A pain, but not too troublesome. I tried it on one file, and lo and behold, the permalinks pointed to a file again.
However, when I now try to download the file in either admin or front-end it seem to download, but on closer inspection it says “Failed – Network error”. (https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2898334?p=ui_download_errors&hl=en&ctx=20&rd=1#network_errors) However, I have a 100Mbit line fibre, so I seriously doubt this is the reason.

Has anyone run in to this problem before? Any solutions out there?

  • I’m having the same problem. Tried deactivating the plugins and reverting the website back to 2015 theme, still no luck.

    SOLUTION

I found a solution!! I deactivated every plugin and revert the website to 2015 theme. Then dashboard — updates reinstalled the current version of wordpress.

    It was successful!

If that doesn’t work, I found an article about exporting the XML file via myPHPadmin, this might be a good alternative
