• “famous 5 minute installation”!!!!!! “Infamous” perhaps.

Can someone help me, please? I have downloaded the folder.. That is as far as I can get. What I encountered next in this “Famous five minute installation” was the gobblydigook pasted below. What exactly is an “FTP”? What is “shell access”? What is “wget”? What do I do next please?

    • If you will be using FTP, skip to the next step – uploading files is covered later.
    • If you have shell access to your web server, and are comfortable using console-based tools, you may wish to download WordPress directly to your web server using wget (or lynx or another console-based web browser) if you want to avoid FTPing:
    o wget http://ww.wp.xz.cn/latest.tar.gz
o Then unzip the package using:
    tar -xzvf latest.tar.gz

  • Truthfully, I had to look up “shell access” and “wget” too.

To me, all of that means that the next step is determine where are you hosting the WordPress site.

For example, are you using a hosting company like GoDaddy, etc. The next step is to upload your files to your designated space on a server somewhere. Note, hosting companies usually have simplified this process to one or two button clicks. So you may not need to upload the files.

If you just want to view a WordPress site on your own computer, it’s a little different process.

I haven’t signed up for a host yet. I wanted to see how easy or difficult it was to use WordPress first. What can be done? Can WordPress be accessed initially without signing a hosting contract?
