Dropdown menu problem

I am having problems creating a drop down menu on the main menu on my homepage.

In the dashboard, I drag a page item underneath another to the right to create a sub-item. However, this does not create a drop down on my site. It simply stacks the pages on top of each other on the menu. I.e. instead of hovering over the main item and the sub-item dropping down, the sub-item is already showing with a bullet point before it.

I have way too many items on my main menu and it currently looks really messy.

Can anyone help?
