Duplicate events from conversion API and pixel since upgrading plugin

I need your help

I upgraded my woocomerce and my plugins a couple of weeks ago. Before the upgrade I just had browser events coming from pixel. Since the upgrade a conversion API connection has been established (I am guessing this is an upgrade within the facebook for woocommerce plugin). This new conversion api connection is sending duplicated events for initiate checkout, add to cart and search events.

When I go into events manager and try and manage the server events it says there are no events setup for it.

My developer has checked the header codes and there is no code in the headers. There is no other plugin which could be sending events or adding code. I have not used pixel helper.

Please any help would be greatly appreciated

It appears to be an issue with the new plugin as this issue is being seen by multiple people in this forum and occurred when the plugin was updated. We have triple checked and we have no other plugin or code in the header generating additional events.

Our ad budget is multiple thousands of pounds a week and the ads are not performing due to these erroneous events.

I am very very keen to get this resolved and this plugin support is the only channel who can assist.

The error wording is:

You’re sending the same event ID for many instances of your AddToCart events. Event IDs are unique identifiers that are used to deduplicate identical events received from your pixel and the Conversions API so they’re not counted twice. To ensure that Facebook is accurately counting your events, each unique event instance needs its own unique event ID.
This may cause issues with the measurement of your events and the attribution of your ad campaigns.

Update

Previously I had the facebook for woocommerce plugin installed and fully integrated and was only getting the standard browser events sent through and no issues with duplicates.

Since upgrading there appears to be a new api conversion element within the plugin which is not obvious – it looks like the existing browser integration so really confusing. I have managed to turn it off so the issue with additional events has gone. There is still an issue to investigate as to why the conversion api was creating events which were then not showing in the event manager – because they were not showing we couldn’t edit them to prevent the duplication – so we have just had to turn it off.

I have configured the plugin on the main ‘configuration’ page ensuring the pixel ID, account, page details etc are all setup and then saved them but then I have disconnected the Facebook and woocommerce integration and this seems to have cut off the conversion api events – putting me back to where I was before was just the browser events coming through.

Obviously I want to get the conversion api setup at some point and the issue mentioned above needs investigating but this fix ensures only the correct events are coming through and hopefully means we can get our ads back on track.

Can you please investigate why the integration is creating conversion events which are then not showing within the events manager …. to be clear – when fullt integrated the conversion api was creating duplicate events but no events where visible within the events manager so we could amend the conversion api events to prevent duplication so I have had to remove the conversion api connection to prevent the issue.

So that we can look into this further on your site, could you please send me a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, you can paste it here in the chat.

Also, I’ve seen instances of this happening with caching / optimization plugins such as WP Rocket. Specifically, the pixel events are sent from the client (JS), so front-end caching could affect the events or maybe cause duplicate IDs. In addition to caching, this commonly happens when using both Facebook for WooCommerce, and the Facebook Pixel plugin causes event duplications.

Could you check on those two things by temporarily disabling them to see if that helps? For more detailed instructions, check out How to test for plugin and theme conflicts.

I’m guessing that Facebook is showing you a message that indicates that event_id parameter is missing from the tracking data similar to:

If I’m understanding correctly, I’ve just done some testing of this on my own test site here: https://wctesting.tk/product/beanie-with-logo/. I used this plugin: https://github.com/WillBrubaker/maybe-route-request-through-moesif to capture the request that was sent to the FaceBook conversions API and I used the Facebook Pixel Helper Chrome browser extension to view the data that is sent using the FaceBook Pixel. With all of that in place, I added an item to my cart. The pixel event shows that the event_id parameter is populated:

Likewise, the request that was sent to the API also contains a value in the event_id parameter:

I also had a look at the issue tracker here: https://github.com/facebookincubator/facebook-for-woocommerce/issues for any reports of this type of behavior caused by the Facebook for WooCommerce but I was unable to find any. This leads me to believe that this is caused by something external to WooCommerce or Facebook for WooCommerce. If you are able to provide the exact steps that can be taken to reproduce this behavior under the following conditions:

An unmodified, default WordPress theme such as Twenty Twenty or Storefront active.
No other plugins except for WooCommerce and Facebook for WooCommerce active.

Please do provide those steps and we can take a closer look.
We do understand that placing a site under those conditions may be disruptive. Many people maintain a staging copy of their site for exactly this purpose. That way, testing and troubleshooting can be done on the staging copy without disrupting the operation of the live site. If your host does not provide an easy way to set up a staging site, you might want to use something like the WP Staging plugin for this purpose.`
