    Hi there,

We are having an issue with the plugin creating two sitemaps. One at: https://SITENAME.com/sitemap.xml and another at: https://SITENAME.com/sitemap_index.xml.

Both sitemaps are the same but we need to remove the duplicate at /sitemap_index.xml. Is there a setting I am missing to remove this additional sitemap?

We are running the latest install of WordPress core and the XML plugin itself is up to date as well.

Otherwise the plugin works flawlessly and has helped our SEO efforts.

  • Hi, can you tell me why the duplicate is a problem? You should not fear getting a “duplicate content penalty” because the sitemap itself is marked “noindex”…

In any case, in the upcoming version, the plugin will not respond to sitemap_index.xml requests any more. Cannot say when it will arrive but it should not be very long. In the mean time, you could create a manual redirect from sitemap_index.xml to sitemap.xml in your .htaccess or use a (powerful) plugin like Redirection to set that up (and monitor it) from within the WordPress admin.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Our SEO partner brought it up to our attention as an issue that needed to be resolved, but I have relayed your response to them and in the meantime have setup that redirect until the upcoming version of the plugin has been released.
