Editing in Snippet Editor

I use the Title and Meta Templates to populate Title and Meta for portfolio pages on one of our sites. It works perfectly except I occasionally need to remove one word in the title or description.
When I click on the snippet editor to remove a word from the title, the entire title disappears. I can’t even copy and paste the title then remove the single word. I have to retype the entire title and description.
Is there a way to just simply edit the existing title and meta description? Am I missing something?
