Editor Style CSS: Remove inline to use selected element

I’m using editor-styles.css to style linked text and want to stop the Format selector from using <span> tags to apply a style. Instead I want it to apply to the element.

For example, if I highlight linked text, I want the Format to apply to the element and not surround the element with <span> tags. The default way messes with my coded styles.
