Embedding the last post into an HTML/PHP page

I’d like to embed the last “n” posts into an HTML/PHP page. I’d also like to be able to determine the current theme and use it to control style. My guess is that someone has already done it. I’d like to have a brief outline of how to do it and what some of the pitfalls are.
