Emptying out a plugin

    Greets:

    Gotta admit that this is a WPMu related question but I’m asking this over here because it concerns plugins more than anything.

    If I empty out a plugin file, would that affect anything or break WordPress? OR should I just delete the dang thing?

    The reason why I’m asking is I’m changing over from one avatar system to another and they involve different functions and file names.

    My concern is, if I just delete the file out of the subdirectory, the call will still be in the database (Aside: It’s a file call and not a function call, correct?) and that may mess something up.

    Hmmm…never tried emptying one out.
    But deleting it is supposed to be foolproof? *cough*
    No hook – no plugin.
    You may still have tables in the db but that really shouldn’t affect anything if the plugin isn’t hooking the software.
    Clear as mud, eh?

    I’m trying/ planning on getting rid of the three gravatar plugins. I’ve asked folks to turn them off but i a quick look around my site shows that it hasn’t happened. What;’s teh function call to turn off a plugin? Maybe I’ll just write up a short script to do it.

    I know when I delete a plugin file, the call stays in teh db. that’s what concerns me.

    right, I’ve also wanted for a long time to try to “empty” the plugin from the db as well. Using a query it’s possible, but I’m always worried about queries since I’m not an expert and I worry about deleting the wrong things. It would be great to have a plugin feature that also deletes data when a plugin is removed (if the admin chooses…)

    I can see where you wouldn’t want to that though. In case you put the plugin back in or had erased it by accident.
