You’re asking for specifics about an extremely broad topic. The answer will always be “It depends.” 🙂 It depends on the user’s specific needs and how a post type should meet those needs. The features for a product post type will not be the same as for an image gallery post type.

The only thing that’s conceivably in common across all possible post types would be along the lines of its edit screen and other UI elements should be clear, intuitive and easy to use.

I sincerely appreciate your valuable response, and I apologize for my delayed presence here.
Absolutely, it’s true that the requirements for custom post types can vary widely based on specific use cases. However, while the functionalities might differ, there are certain universal aspects that users generally seek or struggle to find in many custom post type plugins.

I completely agree that the edit screen and UI elements should be intuitive and user-friendly across different post types. Still, there are other common features that users often desire:

    1. Custom Fields and Metaboxes: Users frequently need the ability to add and manage custom fields or metaboxes to include additional information relevant to their content.
    2. Custom Templates and Display Options: Offering the flexibility to create custom templates or easily customize the display of the custom post type content on the website is often a priority.
    3. Taxonomies and Categories: Users might want to organize their custom post types effectively using taxonomies, categories, or tags.
    4. Permissions and Access Control: Offering control over who can view, edit, or delete custom post type content is another essential aspect for many users.
    5. Import/Export Functionality: Users often find it helpful to have the ability to import and export custom post type data for backup or migration purposes.

Would you agree that these functionalities align with what users generally seek in custom post type plugins?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this or any additional insights you might have!

Sure, they are all potential features, but whether any one feature is needed for a specific post type depends upon its purpose. Typically a developer will incorporate what’s needed when the post type is being developed for a particular purpose. But if you plan on creating a plugin for non-developers to more easily create their own post types, then offering the most features while also not making things too complex will be the challenge. There is always a trade off between features and simplicity. The goal would be to strike a happy balance.
