Entry validation before the loop

On product pages, the mandatory text entry is not validated at the time you add to basket to the cart. The add to cart refreshes the page however, unlike size options the entry is validated only after the add to basket has gone around the loop. Is there a method to check before the add to cart goes around the loop?
