• I have the free version of this plugin installed on my wordpress website. When I attempt to log in I’m asked for my 2FA code. I enter this and the website attempts to load, but fails, giving an error ‘HTTP ERROR 500’.

I cannot even get on to my websites back end to pause or remove this plug-in as I cannot log in! How can I disable this plug in temporarily so I can log in?

Would not recommend this plug in due to this problem currently.

  • Thanks for your thoughts about Wordfence.

We aren’t allowed, per ww.wp.xz.cn forum rules to offer support in the reviews section. Still I’ll post this information here in case someone comes across it in a Google Search.

If you have lost or replaced your old phone and can no longer access your site(s), and you have misplaced the 2FA backup codes, there are 2 ways to get back into the site.

The first way is if you have added the site in Wordfence Central (a free site management tool in your account on wordfence.com).

    • Login to Wordfence.com and look for the Configuration tab.
    • Click the gear icon at the end of the row that the site you need to access is on.
    • Scroll down to the Login Security Options section and expand it by clicking the small black arrow to the right.
    • In the section that says “Allowlisted IP addresses that bypass 2FA” add your public facing IP address.
    • PLEASE NOTE : You can get your public facing IP by clicking this link:
      https://www.whatsmyip.org/

    • Scroll back to the top of the screen and save the changes.
    • You should now be able to login to your site with just a username and password.

If you haven’t added your site to Wordfence Central follow these steps.

    • Please use FTP/SFTP — or any file manager your web host provides via their administration panel.
    • Look inside the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and rename the wordfence directory to wordfence.bak. This will deactivate Wordfence and allow you to login without the 2FA code.
    • Fun Fact : This works to deactivate most any plugin if you have problems with it

    • Once you have logged in to your WordPress admin you can name the folder back to wordfence again.
    • Go to your user profile and add 2FA back to your account, making sure to download the backup codes in case of problems in the future.

I don’t see any forum posts from you about this or any issue so I’m not sure why you defaulted to writing a review when we have paid and trained staff to help in the forums M-F. If you need to know how to access support there is a helpful video available here:

    Thanks!

    Hi Mia,

I’ve logged into wordfence.com but there is no link for the configuration tab and so I am not able to find that gear icon you mentioned. Can you link directly to that page please?

I have left it as a review because I’m not able to use my website at all, meaning I am losing money because of this and it is a review of the service using your plugin. If I was able to resolve this in a quick time, without paying over $500, I would’ve left a positive review. As it stands, it has been over 24 hours since I have been receiving the ‘HTTP ERROR 500’ and still no progress has been made following your steps above. If I am able to get this resolved with your support I would happily leave a positive review.

    Thank you,
    Kieran.

There’s no gear icon because you never added your sites to Wordfence Central. Please see the clear instructions in the section after that that start with :

If you haven’t added your site to Wordfence Central follow these steps.

That’s how you would get into your sites.

    – Mia
