I have downloaded BackWPup in the hopes of creating a staging site (so solved an entirely different issue unfortunately) but when backing up to a dropbox folder I received an ERROR email letting me know that the backup has been aborted.

The default timeout from WordPress may be set relatively low (5 seconds) on some sites. The next plugin update will resolve the issue by not relying on the WordPress timeout, but for now, be timeout could be increased by installing this small plugin or adding the filter in its file to your theme:
