My site went down 5 days ago as well. They said that I had unhosted the url, which I most certainly did not do. When I re-selected fully hosted, my wordpress installation was no longer there and I’m in the process of recovering too. I had a ticket submitted with them, but they’ve nto been helpful and the last ticket has been unanswered for more than 24 hours. I wonder what could be the issue.
Tod, I’m glad we were able to fix your problem.
cellzforless, what’s your domain and/or the help ticket number? I can take a look and maybe spot something.
Love you guys very much and love Mika even more on top of everything. Server down for 3hrs with the same message? come on now, that’s simply unacceptable.
DH really needs to get their… together. My site is on very limited budget, VPS too, having site down in 21st century is something no host should ever have.
Sorry, but I am very frustrated for not being able to help my users when server is not available!
BTW Yes, everything I do is volunteer work, still server should be up!

Emil, man I totally agree!
We do monitor all our servers and database servers all the time, so many times when a ‘db connection’ error pops up, and it’s not due to an outage, we don’t see anything ‘wrong’ (realistically, you might be working on things, or editing your PHP, or messing with your VPS). If the server is down, you bet your bippy we’re on it like Chuck Norris. But when it’s something else, it’s hard to say.
For people running into this for the first time, there are (sadly) a lot of reasons you can get that error.
The very first thing to do is make sure the DB is up! You can go to myql.domain.com, and log in with the password/user combo in that wp-config.php
Assuming you can log in and all your data is there (remember to match your WP prefix to the table names you see), check if you made any PHP changes (like to php.ini or phprc). It’s really easy to shoot yourself in the foot with that (please don’t ask how many times I have 😉 ).
If you didn’t make any changes, tell us! In fact, telling us what you already tested saves us worlds of time, and helps us get through even more tickets. Part of the reason we can’t answer everything as fast as we want is that we have to go back and figure out what you may or may not have done. Giving support the right amount of info to skip steps is hard to learn, but as you do, you’ll find we can fix things faster and faster 🙂
Thanks Mika, I really appreciate that. All is good and working the way it should. It’s just frustrating not being able to reach out the users and DH not giving the reason in time 🙂
I usually don’t change anything on the server, don’t fix if it ain’t broken, that’s the policy I practice all the time.
Anyways, thank you, it means a lot 🙂
P.S. Maybe we can have some type of notifications when the server is down and why, that will help 🙂

We have http://status.dreamhost.com/ and https://twitter.com/dhstatus/ though that’s not as granular as I suspect you want. I recall, before I started here, there was a ‘These are the servers impacted’ but not everyone knows that they’re on dooly, for example, so it was meaningless to them. We did have this page to help: http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/are-you-affected/
Your panel should also alert you to what’s going on.
