We did not make any changes on 29th April, so you may have a server connectivity issue, or a server firewall blocking outgoing connection, or an issue with HTTPS.
Does the problem still persist now that you manually updated the rules?
If it does, try to disable NinjaFirewall HTTPS connection by adding the following to your wp-config.php script:
define('NFW_DONT_USE_SSL', 1);
Then let it run a few hours and check again the updates log for errors.

I had received the ERROR: “Failed to update rules” today itself just a few hours ago. In that email, I was suggested to manually update the rules. But when I tried doing so, nothing happened. Do I still need to try disabling NinjaFirewall HTTPS connection?

I think I should give more information to avoid any misunderstanding.
Today is the first time ever that I received the “ERROR: Failed to update rules” email.
In that email, it was suggested:
1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
2. Go to “NinjaFirewall > Updates”.
3. Click on “Check for updates now!”.
When I checked for updates, I got this message “No update available.”
In the Overview, I see the following information:
NinjaFirewall is running in Full WAF mode.
Version 3.5 ~ Security rules: 2017-04-29.2
Have the security rules not updated since April 28/29? If not, then why did I receive the error “Failed to update rules” email today? If the rules have been updated, why do I see “No update available”.
Thanks.
You already have the latest rules. It looks like you have some kind of reverse proxy, and when your WordPress attempts to connect to the remote server to download the rules, your proxy returns an error message and NinjaFirewall, which receives that message, warn you that this is not the rules it expected to receive.
