I just upgraded to WP 4.01, and when I updated my theme (Twenty-Twelve) and updated my plugins, plus installed new plugins, I keep getting three error messages, all beginning “Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with ww.wp.xz.cn or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to ww.wp.xz.cn. Please contact your server administrator.)” and then pointing to errors in update.php, lines 119, 295 and 457.

I also cannot use the theme editor anymore – I made changes to the stylesheet, hit Save, and got redirected to my site’s 404 page. When I click on any of the theme templates, I get redirected to my site’s 404 page. So I’ve had to resort to editing the files via FTP.

After searching through the forum, I decided to download a copy of WP 4.01 and upload the update.php file from this new copy to my WordPress install, but I’m still getting the three error messages every time I update or install a plugin.

However, it’s not that my updates or plugin installs have failed – everything I’ve updated seems to be working fine, both the theme and the plugins, as well as my new installed plugins (as far as I can tell, anyway). I just get these three error messages every time, which worries me.

Does anyone know of a fix, other than the one I tried?

    Thanks.

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download– all those files, not just the update.php. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Thanks – I was hoping to avoid doing that, but you’re right, it’s probably my best option.
