Error: Remote server returned an unexpected status code (520)

Hi JetPack Support Team
I am receiving “We cannot complete this request, remote server returned an unexpected status code (520)” on several of the JetPack hosted images.
Have a look on this link: Prayer and Fasting Schedule in Ramadan 2019 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (English, Arabic) – The Clear Evidence
Several images are not loading and returning the error, plz have a look, thanks.

Hey there, usually when we see this it means the server had trouble picking up the images. We can check them by viewing the original image to see if that works.
This one gives a Not Found: https://theclearevidence.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Prayer-and-Fasting-Schedule-in-Ramadan-2019-in-Riyadh-Saudi-Arabia-English-Arabic-7.jpg
And this image is also a 404 that displays an entire article:
https://theclearevidence.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Prayer-and-Fasting-Schedule-in-Ramadan-2019-in-Riyadh-Saudi-Arabia-English-Arabic-14.jpgCan you replace the images in the affected article to see if that helps?
Thanks @supernovia for your prompt response!
I have uploaded some images again and that fixed the issue for those images but now, some images are not displaying in the JetPack tiled gallery on the same post, although once you click on them, they load fine.
Screenshot of empty placeholders: https://www.screencast.com/t/bLE77QQfFKt
Hmm, the CDN link for those missing images are also working, e.g. https://i2.wp.com/theclearevidence.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Prayer-and-Fasting-Schedule-in-Ramadan-2019-in-Riyadh-Saudi-Arabia-English-Arabic-26.jpg?fit=172%2C300&ssl=1
But if I look at the Network tab in my browser tools, I only see requests from the browser to load up to image number 25. From number 26, there’s simply no network request to actually fetch the image.
I see your site hasn’t synced with Jetpack in a while, so first I’m going to schedule a full sync for your site. Please give that around 24 hours.
If the images still aren’t visible in the gallery by tomorrow, please upload image 26 again as a test, but with a slightly modified filename, and replace it in the gallery. If that works, you can repeat the process with the remaining images – in that case there’s likely a problem with the cached versions of those images, so uploading a new file and letting the new file get cached instead should do the trick.
Hi @kokkieh
The full sync was completed in less than an hour, I waited for a total of 19.5h but that did not fix the issue thus I proceeded with uploading image number 26 with a different filename but it still did not display:
Original image link is working fine: https://theclearevidence.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Prayer-and-Fasting-Schedule-in-Ramadan-2019-in-Riyadh-Saudi-Arabia-English-Arabic-26a.jpg
But jetpack image link is returning an error, “We cannot complete this request, remote data could not be fetched”
Screenshot of the error: https://www.screencast.com/t/h6OKHkA9lC
In fact, now the error is effecting my new posts as well, so much so that I couldn’t publish time-critical new posts 6hr ago.
This is now affecting my work very badly, plz have a look, thanks!
After some delay, image 26 (renamed) started displaying thus I proceeded with uploading images 27 – 30 (renamed) but now image gallery is not displaying several images again, even those which were visible before.

I disabled the JetPack image accelerator but still, the gallery is not showing images properly, which made me think if its a gallery issue.
But the following images on new posts are also not visible thus it seems multiple issues related to JetPack images are effecting my site.
I am now proceeding with disabling the JetPack image accelerator in order to publish new posts.
Hi @kokkieh , @supernovia
I am still running the site without site accelerator and the images gallery is not working properly as well, plz guide, thanks.
Would you be willing to put fewer images in this gallery, and perhaps make a second post for the rest? I have to think your server is timing out or blocking us before it can finish sending all the images.
It seems unlikely because when I created this post in 2019, all images were displaying fine, I noticed the issue just recently.
Secondly, here is another post, which is displaying the same amount of images in a single gallery block and all are working fine: https://theclearevidence.org/charity-projects/request-for-donations-for-ration-packs-distribution-among-daily-wagers-families-affected-by-the-lockdown-in-rawalpindi-and-islamabad/
But as you mentioned to divide the images among posts, this led me to divide the images among multiple gallery blocks, and that has fixed the issue, thus it still seems to be a bug in the gallery block, and maybe it has appeared in some of the recent updates of Jetpack as I did not face this issue previously.
Now what should I do about the following images, those are single images and not in gallery blocks:
I am not able to turn on the site accelerator due to this issue.

How are you creating these galleries? Do you 1) upload the images to the media gallery first, then create your post, add the gallery block, and select the images? 2) Create your post, add the gallery block, and upload the images via the controls for the block? Or 3) create your post, and drag images directly from your computer’s file manager into the editor?
I’ve found a bug report in https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/14536 which sounds similar to what’s happening on your site.
Now what should I do about the following images, those are single images and not in gallery blocks:
On what post/page are these? If you’ve switched off the Site Accelerator feature, you shouldn’t be seeing
i2.wp.comlinks for images not in a tiled gallery at all.I am using option 2, I create the post, add tiled gallery block and upload the images using “upload image” option in the tiled gallery block. It seems very similar to the reported bug.
The single images are not in a tiled gallery, those are featured image and single image in the post body. As initially, we were suspecting that gallery images were not displayed due to Site Accelerator cashing issue thus I reported that issue here. If you like then I can report it in a separate thread.
With Site Accelerator on, the post looks like: https://www.screencast.com/t/W38cJGC9urz
Images links:
I renamed them, reloaded them, tried 5 to 6 times but the images never appeared thus I had to disable Site Accelerator, the images load fine after that.
I see you’ve commented on the GitHub issue already. I’ve just added a link back to this thread so our developer can get more information if needed.
For the single images (and potentially another cause for the gallery issue), the problem could be that our CDN servers are taking too long to cache the images once you upload it. Most often this happens when your hosting provider is either blocking, throttling, or rate-limiting our connection via which the image is uploaded from your media library to the CDN server. In that case the image will work for some people, but not for others, depending on which CDN server they’re connected to when they try to view your site.
Unfortunately there’s not really anything we can do about that, as we can’t cache an image if a host won’t let us. In that case disabling site accelerator is likely the only option.
Thanks for the comment, I have made this video to show what is happening with the gallery, while making this video the Site Accelerator was off thus this issue has nothing to do with the CDN servers.

I have been using Site Accelerator for more than a year with the same hosting, this issue is recent, can you plz provide some technical proof which I can share with my hosting company and can try to get the blocking, throttling, or rate-limiting removed?

Images added in a Jetpack tiled gallery block are always served via the CDN, even if the Site Accelerator module is switched off. That’s why you’ll still see
i2.wp.comlinks for the gallery images if you view the source code in the browser inspector.can you plz provide some technical proof which I can share with my hosting company
I can’t, no, as I have no way to confirm this is what’s happening. I said above this could be the cause, in other words, it’s merely a possibility, but as we’ve ruled out all other probable causes it’s the most likely option. Rate limiting at your host is also only one possible reason why this happens – it can also happen due to simply low data transfer speeds between your server and the specific CDN server where we’re trying to cache the files, especially if it’s a CDN server that’s geographically the farthest from your hosting provider’s server.
There’s nothing else I know of that we can try here, but if you open a support ticket at https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support our team there might be able to suggest something else. If you open a ticket there, please include a link to this forum thread.
My hosting server is in Sweden, I have opened a ticket, hopefully a solution can be found as I have been using Site Accelerator for more than a year and now all of a sudden I have to stop using it and we can’t even pinpoint the issue which can be resolved.
Thanks @kokkieh for your support!
