Error screen when creating or editing a Section makes site appear broken

Plugins – Custom Posts Order – Settings
Type a word and click Add Section. It then shows a gray page:

The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

You can press Back or go back to the Settings through Plugins and the new section will show in the list. Then select Edit and the same error screen shows.
